According to Jane, de Marilyn Brant

Décidément, on peut dire que dernièrement, je passe du coq à l'âne. J'ai terminé il y a peu de temps un roman sur fond de guerre et de racisme (Small Island ) et me voilà fraîchement débarqué d'un univers qu'on ne pourrait trouver plus différent.
Autant le dire tout de suite : ce roman se situe dans le genre de la romance ou de la chick-lit. Si ce n'est pas votre tasse de thé, je vous prie de passer votre chemin. Je pense tout à fait sérieusement que ce roman ne pourrait pas vous plaire

Ce livre est le premier roman de l'américaine Marilyn Brant. J'en ai entendu parler un peu partout sur la blogosphère. Mais c'est l'avis dithyrambique de la rédactrice d'Austenprose qui m'a donnée envie de m'y plonger. Vous pouvez le lire à cette adresse :

L'intrigue me semblait particulièrement accrocheuse. C'est l'histoire d'une jeune fille, Ellie, geek et grande amoureuse des livres, qui, en plein cours sur Pride & Prejudice, entend Jane Austen lui parler. Elllie est-elle devenue folle ? Il semblerait que non. L'esprit du grand auteur anglais serait bien en train de communiquer avec elle !
Les conseils sages, quoiqu'ironiques de Jane, aideront Ellie à passer par les plus difficiles épreuves de l'adolescence. Même si, comme on peut s'en douter, la jeune fille a parfois bien du mal à ne pas laisser tout simplement parler son coeur ... Jane Austen n'a de cesse de prôner le self control et la prudence. Et Ellie, bien qu'intelligente et sensible, ne peut s'empêcher d'être un peu trop rêveuse pour son bien ...
Notre histoire commence lorsque Jane met Ellie en garde contre son camarade de classe, Sam Blaine. Ce dernier aime flirter avec elle et fait chavirer son coeur depuis ... hum... toujours. Son comportement est ambigu et Ellie ne sait guère comment appréhender ce jeune homme, qui même s'il tourne autour d'elle, a aussi beaucoup de succès auprès du reste de la gente féminine ... Jane a un avis sur la question et elle le lui fait savoir clairement : il est son "Mr Wickham".
Marilyn Brant décrit avec beaucoup d'émotion et de nuances les affres de l'adolescence. J'ignore si elle parle en connaissance de cause mais ses descriptions sonnent très justes. Les élans du coeur ne semblent avoir aucun secret pour elle. Certains passages sont particulièrement touchants. On ressent de l'empathie pour le personnage d'Ellie qui, décidément, a bien du mal à trouver chaussure à son pied ...
Je pensais être face à un roman pour adolescents mais finalement, je crois qu'on est plutôt en présence d'un livre de romance, tout simplement. Certains passages sont assez explicites mais ne tombent pas non plus dans la vulgarité. Je pense qu'il fallait tout de même que je vous le signale ^^
L'ensemble du roman rappelle un peu l'univers de Meg Cabot. C'est plutôt bien écrit, rythmé, construit et les personnages et leurs relations sont dépeints avec finesse et drôlerie. C'est aussi - mais ai-je besoin de le préciser ? - particulièrement romantiiiiiiiiiiiiiiique
Cet ouvrage n'est clairement pas un chef d'oeuvre mais c'est un divertissement plus qu'honorable (qui se prêterait sans doute très bien à une adaptation ciné - une comédie romantique de ce genre, je ne la refuserai pas )

Si je devais mettre un bémol, je dirais que la fin ne m'a pas entièrement convaincue, mais je ne peux en dire plus, au risque de vous spoiler ...

According to Jane est donc un roman qui se dévore en moins de temps qu'il n'en faut pour le dire. Si vous avez envie d'un peu de douceur dans ce monde de brutes, ne boudez pas votre plaisir !

Ça donne super envie

C'est clair que des fois avoir Jane Austen dans la tête qui donne des conseils, ça pourrait être utile dans certaines situations

Le roman sort dans une dizaine de jours en Angleterre et je songe sérieusement à me l'offrir Non seulement pour le bien qu'en dit notre chère Emjy mais aussi parce que je crois fortement que ça pourrait me plaire

My French is terrible (even though I studied it in school for 5 years), so you are far ahead of me with your English!! You write very well :-).

Thank you so much for your interest in my book. (Merci beaucoup pour votre curiosite de mon livre... See? I think I made some mistakes in just that short sentence!!) I truly hope the book rights will sell someday soon to France and that the story will be translated into French. But I do not have any control over this at all. When my publisher bought the book last year, they asked for "World Rights." This means that it is going to be the publisher's job to try to sell the book to other countries in the world--like England, France, Germany, etc.--and that I have no part in deciding where it goes...or when. From what other authors have told me about the process, I won't know if the book rights are sold to France until I get a copy of the book sent to me and it's already in French! This could happen six months from now, or it could be in 3 years, or it might never happen at all. So, unfortunately, I do not have a good answer!

But, just so you know, I have one character in According to Jane who really loves to speak in French! Her name in Angelique, and she is the very intelligent cousin of my main character. So, if you did ever read the book in English, at least there would be a few sentences already translated into French!

Je te remercie de ton intérêt pour mon livre. (Merci beaucoup pour votre curiosite de mon livre... Tu vois ? Je pense qu'il y a déjà quelques erreurs dans cette toute petite phrase !!) J'espère vraiment que les droits du livre seront un jour prochain vendus en France et que l'histoire sera traduite en français. Mais je n'ai absolument aucun contrôle là-dessus. Quand mon éditeur a acheté le livre l'an dernier, il a demandé les "droits internationaux". Ce qui veut dire que ça va être le boulot de l'éditeur d'essayer de vendre le livre dans d'autres pays à travers le monde--comme l'Angleterre, la France, l'Allemagne, etc.--et que j'ai n'ai pas mon mot à dire sur ou il va être vendu...ou quand. D'après ce que d'autre auteurs m'ont dit du processus, je ne saurai pas si les droits du livre ont été vendus en France jusqu'à ce que j'aie reçu un exemplaire du livre déjà traduit en français! Cela peut arriver dans six mois, ou bien dans trois ans, ou cela ne pourrait même jamais arriver. Donc, malheureusement, je n'ai pas de réponse à te donner!

Mais j'ai un personnage dans According to Jane qui adore vraiment parler français! Son nom est Angelique, et c'est la très intelligente cousine de mon personnage principal. Alors, si tu lisais un jour le livre en anglais, il y aurait au moins déjà quelques phrases traduites en français!

First of all, many thanks to Aurélie for reading my debut novel and writing such a lovely review of According to Jane. I appreciate her excellent questions and her invitation to interview me for your Austen forum. It’s a pleasure to join you all! (*waving hello to Cindy, too*)



Second, I truly apologize for being so dreadful at writing in French and, thus, unable to translate my answers properly for you myself. I’m sure if I made that attempt you would all be horrified by the bad grammar of my responses…and they would probably make no sense either. In my high school, we were offered the opportunity to study French, Spanish or German. My friends all chose Spanish or German; I was the only one of the group who chose to study French. It was the language I thought the most beautiful and, also, it was one both of my parents spoke fluently. (They each speak multiple languages.) I did well enough on the tests and memorizing of vocabulary words, but when I spoke aloud, my mother, who had been taught by French nuns as a child, covered her ears and said something about how Sister Brigit would be rolling over in her grave if she could hear my bad accent and awkward phrasing! So, you see? I was not destined to become a talented linguist…


Finally, I hope I’ve answered these questions well and that you’ll be able to understand my meaning. If there is something that you’re unsure about, perhaps Aurélie could send me an email later and I could answer another question or two or clarify something I wrote a little better for you.

1) What are your favorite authors and books besides Jane Austen?

I really like romantic comedy, young adult novels and women’s fiction, and I read a lot in those genres. Growing up, some of my favorite books were Anne of Green Gables, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, A Separate Peace and Love Story (in addition to all of Austen’s novels). I also really loved A Room with a View, the plays of Oscar Wilde and the Shakespearean comedies. Now, I read some fairly serious authors (like Sue Miller, Anita Shreve, Anne Tyler, Alice Hoffman and Elizabeth Berg), as well as others who write lighter books (like Jennifer Weiner, J.K. Rowling, Joanne Harris, Jennifer Crusie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Janet Evanovich, Meg Cabot, Jane Porter and Audrey Niffenegger). If there are some great authors you’d recommend that I read, I’m open to suggestions!



2) When did you discover Jane Austen? What are your favorite novels of hers? Your favorite characters?

I was a high-school freshman, age 14, when I first read Pride & Prejudice. I was mesmerized by Austen’s incredible ability to show a range of human behavior with such accuracy, timelessness and universality. I wanted every writer I read to be as insightful. Her genius for characterization remains the standard by which I measure the skill of all other authors, and I’ve loved every book she wrote. However, P&P will always be my favorite, and Darcy and Elizabeth are my favorite characters. I’m extremely commonplace in my taste, I know--I can’t help it J. Persuasion is my second favorite, and I do adore Anne and Captain Wentworth. Third, Sense & Sensibility, I think, but there’s much I love about Emma and the others. I quite like Mr. Knightley (!!), and I can’t help but find Mary Crawford to be a fascinating character, even though her behavior was not always the best.




3) Is Ellie a bit like you?

Yes, Ellie is like me...in some ways. She and I share a certain type of introspection and we each had a tendency toward perfectionism in school, plus, we were both children of 1980s pop culture. However, I have only one sibling--an incredibly supportive and wonderful brother--so a lot of Ellie’s family issues were not drawn from real-life at all. As for dating, while I’ll admit to having made a lamentable boyfriend choice or two (especially in college--yikes!), I met my husband right out of college and was happily married pretty young. So, Ellie’s painful relationship problems were (thankfully!) extrapolated from things I observed or they were exaggerated from some real events and grafted to modernized versions of scenes I found fascinating in Austen’s novels.



4) If According to Jane is made into a movie, what actors would you chose for your characters, especially for Ellie and Sam?

I never know who to select for this… Both would have to be actors who can convincingly play a range from teenager to early thirty-something. So, I think they’d have to really be in their mid-twenties to pull that off onscreen. I’ve always imagined Sam to be someone like a young John Cusack--the way he was in the ‘80s film “The Sure Thing”--smirky, clever and slowly discovering that he wanted something and someone rather different from what he’d expected. As for Ellie, someone like Emma Watson, perhaps, with the intensity and intelligence of a Hermione, but not the confidence or outspokenness. (For those of you who read the book: Who would you like to see playing these characters??) If According to Jane were ever actually turned into a movie, I’d happily trust these decisions to the casting director and just enjoy watching the film. I would be SO excited!! The truth is, of course, that it is very unlikely for any novelist to get a movie deal. My literary agent has handed the book over to a film agency in Los Angeles, but it’s considered a VERY long shot to get a film production company interested in even optioning the book for the screen. I do have several family members and friends who have offered themselves up to BE in a movie, if one were made, though--LOL! They’ve told me they’d cheerfully play any part in it!!



5) Do you plan to write another novel? If you do, what kind of book will it be?

Oh, yes! I plan to write MANY novels. My hope, of course, is that my editor will want to publish them! My second novel, Fridays at Nine, is already scheduled to be released on October 1, 2010. It’s considered women’s fiction, and it’s a modern fairy tale about three very different women--all of them married, suburban, forty-something moms. One of these women gets a surprising email from her college ex-boyfriend. (A man she hasn’t talked to in 18 years!) This brings up many old feelings from the past. So, she asks her two friends if they felt they’d married the right man…or if, perhaps, knowing what they now know about their husbands, if there is someone else they would rather be with instead. Each of the women must figure out her own answer to this question. Also, I’ve just begun work this month on a third novel--it is not under contract yet, so I can’t divulge many details--but I will say that most of the story will take place in Europe as part of a summer trip. There will be several stops in France (!!) as well as visits to Italy, Austria, England and a few other countries.



6) Did you see some Jane Austen movies or TV adaptations? What are your favorites and less favorites?

I think I’ve seen almost all of them. Certainly, my husband would complain that we own too many Austen DVDs J. I’m not trying to be overly diplomatic, but the truth is that I like elements of almost every production. Starting with P&P, I adore the Colin Firth version. It’s so true to the novel and includes much authentic Regency detail. However, the Keira and Matthew version is fabulous in the sense of having so much energy. I was immediately impressed by the fact that those actors were the appropriate ages for the characters. In Matthew’s case, he really succeeded in portraying a Darcy who was both bound by duty and still very youthful. There was a vulnerability about him that was very appealing. And the “Lost in Austen” production is just so much fun! The first P&P I saw was with Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintool, and I loved the way his smile at the end of the film brightened his whole face. That actor really made me believe he’d fallen in love. And Lawrence Olivier was truly just so dashing. I watched that very old version in high school and--although I was disturbed by the crazy things the director added to the plot in that film (a secretly goodhearted Lady Catherine?! no!!)--the onscreen chemistry between Olivier and Greer Garson was believable to me. As for adaptations of other books, the Amanda Root version of Persuasion is my favorite for that novel, and I love the Emma Thompson/Kate Winslet/Hugh Grant version of S&S. And the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma. Oh! And Clueless--I LOVED that film! And Bridget Jones's Diary, of course. (Do you really want me to keep going? I even watched and enjoyed the Latter-Day Saints production of P&P, and I liked Bride & Prejudice, too. I’m not picky.)



7) Why was Jane so skeptical about Sam? Is it because she doesn't trust too charming men?

Based on what I understood from her letters, the real Jane Austen was very skeptical of charm and flattery. So, no, she didn’t trust it! The Jane in my book mirrors this belief and, also, she is reminded of someone she doesn’t much like when she first encounters Sam Blaine. (It would be a spoiler to tell who that is!) Sam creates a bad “first impression,” if you will, much like Elizabeth Bennet’s first reaction to Mr. Darcy. However, there’s more to the problem than this, and that is Ellie’s own confusion and inability to know her own mind and heart. (Similar to how Elizabeth said, after reading Darcy’s letter, that “until this moment she never really knew herself.”) The need for Ellie to have enough time to really know herself is one of the main reasons why my book covers a period of nearly 20 years. In spite of Jane’s attempts at guidance (often unsuccessful!), this is Ellie’s relationship “odyssey”--and I mean that very much in the Homeric sense. Just as Odysseus had to journey on through two decades of challenges, frustrations and danger, Ellie is traveling through a modern woman’s relationship version of this before she’s able to “return home.” There may not have been the literal sea perils like the Sirens or Scylla and Charybdis, but there were bad boyfriends, nasty schoolmates, unkind family members, etc. By narrowly avoiding one bad choice, Ellie sometimes ended up with a different but equally bad problem. Jane (who in this way is kind of like a parallel goddess to Athena) certainly considered Sam a "Wickham" or sea monster like Scylla--very dangerous to Ellie’s heart--and she continually tries to get Ellie to recognize this danger. Ellie steers off course more than once, though, and fights to survive the emotional warfare of love. There’s no way for her to get where she really wants to go until she is able to do it humbly and honestly. Only then can she understand Jane's cautions and attempts at protecting her, but she also has the strength to finally follow her heart and listen to her own voice.



8) What are you reading now?

I have 2 books on my currently-reading shelf that I’m very excited about. (I only wish it were easier to find free time to read as much as I want…) Those books are The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows--I love the quirky characters in the story--and Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby, who shares a such a passion for music that I’ve always loved his books. I’ve read a few chapters of each novel and I don’t want to put them down !
